Digital Storytelling – Using Film to Communicate Environmental Conservation

In 2022, Pope Francis sparked a wave of global environmental activism with the documentary  The Letter: A Message for Our Earth, which premiered on October 4 at the Vatican. Today, as we mark the Feast of Creation, we honor King Oyo, a devoted youth leader whose love for nature inspired him to scale the Rwenzori Mountains. Driven by a childhood dream to discover the source of life for his people, he faced the stark realities of climate change and emerged as a passionate champion for environmental conservation and eco-tourism.

On November 17, 2023, the documentary “Rwenzori: The Source of Life” was released. It features His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV and a team of mountaineers as they summit Margherita Peak, Uganda’s highest point. This short film, a collaboration between the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), and the Tooro Kingdom, advocates for climate action, inclusive growth, and sustainable tourism in the Rwenzori Mountains. It underscores the urgent need to restore and conserve these fragile ecosystems, which are vital to Uganda and Africa’s prosperity. UNDP and UTB produced and directed the film, with UNDP funding.

Following King Oyo’s passing, we began documenting his ecological contributions. This film highlights his leadership in cultural environmental activism and his dedication to caring for his land and people. (UNDP Uganda, 2023)

In “Rwenzori: The Source of Life,” King Oyo is the central figure, and his advocacy for nature is clearly highlighted. For us, this film represents the legacy of a cultural leader who became a youth environmental advocate. The Laudato Youth Initiative, through its Laudato Si Voices, found expression in this film, drawing inspiration from Pope Francis’ documentary The Letter. The film presents three key exhibits for readers and leaders to reflect on King Oyo’s ecological legacy.

He saw the breathtaking beauty of the Mountains of the Moon and understood how vital it was to protect them. He called on local communities to come together for climate action, echoing the spirit of Laudato Si’ that inspires our Laudato Si Clubs.

He acknowledged that those who call this land their own to unite for climate action. As Laudato Si’ states, “Young people wonder how anyone can claim to be building a better future without thinking of the environmental crisis.” — Laudato Si’, 13. His life stands as a testament, leaving bold footprints that we share through these three exhibits.

Legacy Exhibit Four – The passing of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV prompted the people of Tooro, Uganda, and the world to mourn one of their most iconic leaders and the world’s youngest reigning monarch.

For more than thirty years, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV shaped the story of modern Tooro. Taking the throne at just three years old as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, he grew into a cultural leader celebrated for championing health, empowering youth, protecting the environment, and breathing new life into the kingdom.

On August 3, 2022, His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, King of the Toro Kingdom, fulfilled his lifelong dream by reaching the summit of Margherita Peak. This triumph became a rallying cry for climate awareness and protecting the Rwenzori Mountains. King Oyo’s journey was a true display of leadership and a living example of the cultural duty to care for our shared home.

King Oyo’s climb to Margherita Peak echoed worldwide as a powerful message. He stepped away from royal comforts to join mountaineers on this demanding quest. His ascent was a purposeful act of stewardship, urging us all to safeguard the future of his people and the planet.

This extraordinary expedition inspired the documentary Rwenzori: The Source of Life, a creative partnership between the United Nations Development Program, Uganda Tourism Board, and the Toro Kingdom. The film spotlights climate action and reveals the delicate beauty and vulnerability of the Rwenzori ecosystem.
