The arrival of King Oyo’s remains marks the start of nine days of mourning in Tooro Kingdom. On Friday, September 4, 2026, President Museveni received the remains of His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV at Entebbe, as the nation united in tribute. Many mourners were visibly moved along the roads to Karuzika in Fort Portal. May His Majesty’s soul rest in eternal peace.

Museveni laid a wreath and bowed before the casket. He later signed a condolence book. In his speech, the President recalled King Oyo ascending to the throne at age three. …..We are still thankful for the short life he had. He was a good leader. He was not so voluble, and he never allowed the kingdom to veer off into other aspects. For now, we shall talk about the rest at the right time. At the moment, we call upon all the people of Tooro to stay calm. Do not be chaotic. We shall sit and discuss the rest. May God give King Oyo rest in everlasting life.
After the reception at Entebbe Airport, King Oyo’s body was flown by military helicopter to Kyegegwa in western Uganda, then transported by road to Karuzika in Fort Portal. Thousands gathered along the route, mourning a historic icon of hope and peace. A new era begins, guided by his call for unity.

King Oyo’s life
King Oyo’s life was inspirational from the outset. He ascended the throne of the Tooro Kingdom on September 12, 1995, at age three, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Olimi Kaboyo II (Ashaba, 2025). Guinness World Records recognized him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, highlighting the unique circumstances of his accession and his decades of cultural leadership (Guinness World Records, 2025). His burial now coincides with his 31st coronation anniversary.
King Oyo died on August 27, 2026, at age 34, a day after his father’s death anniversary. Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced his passing, followed by an official announcement to clan heads by Musuuga Charles Kayondo Kamurasi, head of the Babiito royal clan. While traditional monarchs in Uganda do not hold political power, they maintain significant cultural and social influence as custodians of heritage and community values (Associated Press, 2026; Reuters, 2026). King Oyo Ecological legacy
A Royal Expedition (2022) to climb the Rwenzori Mountain Range (16’763ft) to raise awareness of the adverse effects of Global Warming and mitigation against such adverse impacts. Additionally, this expedition was to stimulate the benefits of Mountaineering as a Tourism Product for Ugandans and Foreigners alike. Established the first of its kind “Model Farm” in the Tooro Kingdom for the purposes of educating the general populace on responsible Agricultural practices irrespective of the land size or location. Championed the establishment of an International University in the Tooro Kingdom to serve the local communities and the International students who are interested in the curriculum offering. Commissioned and led the initiative to save the River Mpanga located at the heart of Fort Portal City. Actively a Youth Advocate to the young populace of the Tooro Kingdom. Commissioned the Historic “World Monarch Summit” Secretariat to be domiciled in Uganda. Internationally premiered (2023) the National Geographic-filmed Royal Rwenzori Mountain Expedition at the prestigious Legacy International Center in San Diego, California.
His leadership drew attention to environmental degradation and climate-related challenges.
King Oyo used his leadership to draw attention to environmental degradation, climate-related challenges, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable tourism. His environmental message was remarkably practical: plant trees, protect wetlands, conserve forests, safeguard rivers, and help people understand the value of the natural heritage around them.
A King Who Put the Environment on the Public Agenda
“Young people demand change. They wonder how anyone can claim to be building a better future without thinking of the environmental crisis and the sufferings of the poor.” (Pope Francis, Laudato Si’, 13)
Laudato Si’ calls for a “responsible and fraternal response to the Triune God.” The ecological question is theological: how we care for Creation shapes our relationship with God, a reality King Oyo understood. Environmental deterioration is alarming, and urgent action is needed for sustainability. Everything is connected; we must listen to the cry of the Earth and those with low incomes. King Oyo climbed Mountain Rwenzori, engaged with his people, understood poverty, and served as an icon of hope.
Spiritually
Commissioned the first-ever Christian Crusade to be led by a Monarch of the Tooro Kingdom to widely preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the City of Fort Portal (2023). In his last Interview he acknowledged the power of God and what He has been to his life, thanking Him for the gift of life.
ICT /EDUCATION
Commissioned an ICT Center to be built in Fort Portal City to enable the Youth of the Tooro Kingdom to become computer literate and well-versed in current ICT trending matters. The first Monarch in Uganda to Commission International Special Envoys to manage global affairs and relationships on behalf of the King and Kingdom. With all the above and much more, His Royal Majesty King Oyo has ably demonstrated his humility, wisdom, and courage as a leading Monarch who inspired his people to follow him in every respect.
Peace
He received the Keys from the mayors of many Cities in the United States of America. Became a United Nations Global Peace Ambassador (2023). Advocated for Peace in Africa by uniting all African Kings and Cultural Leaders in Uganda and throughout Africa in general.
King Oyo Named Commander of the Noble Order of Global Peace Ambassadors
Demonstrated exemplary leadership as Monarch since the age of 3years (Declared in the Guinness Book of Records as the youngest King in the world).
HIV/AIDS
Awarded an Honorary Ph.D for his exemplary work as an HIV/AIDS Ambassador. Nominated a Global Ambassador to end HIV/AIDS by 2030 (Resultant of tireless campaigns to sensitize the youth in several Universities and colleges on the adverse impact of HIV/AIDS).
Sports
Leads Youth sporting initiatives throughout the Tooro Kingdom to stimulate young minds and to engage them in meaningful sporting activities.
