Laudato Si Green Festival brings to life Pope Francis’ Vision in Laudato Si’, where he called for an “ecological conversion” that unites science, education, innovation, and moral responsibility.
The Laudato Si’ Green Festival emerged as a vibrant celebration of youth innovation, environmental stewardship, and technological creativity, bringing together students, educators, innovators, policymakers, and development partners to champion sustainable solutions for Uganda’s future.
Described by many as a launchpad for the next generation of environmental leaders in Uganda, the festival provided an interactive eco-exhibition where students proudly showcased groundbreaking innovations designed to address pressing environmental challenges. Through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), participants demonstrated that young people are not only aware of climate issues but are also actively developing practical solutions that can transform their communities.
The event was graced by distinguished guests, including the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba; Fr. Peter, Provincial Superior of Holy Cross, Province of East Africa; Hon. Salaam Musumba; and members of the Busoga Catholics in Kampala, whose presence underscored the importance of empowering youth to lead the country’s sustainability agenda.
Beyond the exhibitions, the festival created a dynamic platform for learning, collaboration, and leadership development. Students exchanged ideas, engaged in meaningful dialogue with experts and innovators, and strengthened practical STEM skills aimed at solving environmental problems. They also enhanced their communication, branding, and digital advocacy abilities, embracing their role as Digital Missionaries of Hope committed to promoting environmental awareness and positive social change.
The Laudato Si’ Green Festival highlighted the growing impact of the Laudato Youth Initiative, a movement dedicated to equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to harness technology for the common good. By encouraging innovation, critical thinking, and environmental responsibility, the initiative is nurturing a new generation of changemakers committed to building sustainable and resilient communities.
The success of the festival was made possible through the unwavering dedication of the Laudato Youth Initiative mentors, the Laudato Si’ Clubs, and a network of committed partners. These included the JDIOBE STEM Foundation, Bethany Land Institute, the Holy Cross Lake View Handcraft Team, Holy Cross, Province of East Africa, school science departments, and many other organizations that showcased inspiring projects and supported the event’s vision.
As the festival concluded, one message resonated clearly: this is only the beginning. The Laudato Si’ Green Festival has planted seeds of innovation, leadership, and environmental responsibility that will continue to grow through the passion and commitment of Uganda’s youth.
