Kampala, Uganda – Laudato Si’ Clubs across Uganda have been encouraged to actively participate in the newly launched National Cleaning Days Initiative, following a Cabinet Circular issued by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, directing all citizens and institutions to take part in the monthly nationwide environmental sanitation exercise.
The Cabinet Circular, dated 30 June 2026, officially establishes the National Cleaning Days (NACDs) as a national programme aimed at improving environmental sanitation, promoting responsible waste management and strengthening community participation in keeping Uganda clean.
Beginning 25 July 2026, and thereafter on the last Saturday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., all Ugandans are expected to participate in organised cleaning activities within their communities.
The initiative, which was approved by Cabinet in August 2025, seeks to improve environmental sanitation in both urban and rural areas, promote behaviour change towards hygiene and environmental stewardship, reduce sanitation-related diseases, protect water sources and ecosystems, and foster a culture of civic responsibility among citizens.
As Catholic youth led environmental Initaitive inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, through our Laudato Si’ Clubs we have been cordinating community cleaning events and family sanitation programs in parishes thus we welcome this idea and are well positioned to actively participate and support in raising awareness for this good cause national campaign. Our Laudato Youth Club Patrons in schools, universities, parishes dioceses and communities are therefore encouraged to mobilise their clubs, institutions, communities and local residents to participate in community clean-up exercises, tree planting, drainage clearing, proper waste management and environmental awareness campaigns during every National Cleaning Day.
The Cabinet Circular calls upon all institutions, including schools, places of worship, health facilities, markets and civil society organisations, to actively participate in the initiative. It further urges leaders at all levels to champion the programme and demonstrate leadership through personal involvement in the monthly cleaning exercises.
The Office of the Prime Minister will provide overall policy oversight, while the Ministry of Health will coordinate technical implementation, monitoring and reporting. Ministries, Departments and Agencies, together with local governments, are required to integrate National Cleaning Days into their annual work plans and mobilise communities for sustained participation.
For Laudato Si’ Clubs, the initiative presents an opportunity to deepen their commitment to caring for creation by translating environmental advocacy into visible community action. Through regular participation in National Cleaning Days, club members can contribute to cleaner schools, healthier neighbourhoods, restored ecosystems and increased public awareness about environmental protection.
The Government has emphasised that the success of the initiative depends on collective responsibility and sustained behavioural change. Every Ugandan is therefore encouraged to play an active role in creating cleaner, safer and healthier communities.
As the first National Cleaning Day approaches on Saturday, 25 July 2026, Laudato Si’ Clubs are encouraged to organise their members, collaborate with parish leaders, schools, local authorities and community organisations, and become ambassadors of environmental stewardship in line with both the Government’s national agenda and the Church’s call to care for our common home.
The Prime Minister concluded the Cabinet Circular with a strong appeal to all Ugandans: “A Clean Uganda is Everybody’s Responsibility.”
