The Laudato Youth initiative’ Laudato Si Green Festival igniting hope for the Legacy of Laudato Si’ in Uganda as LYI Executive Director Mr. Benard Kahwa Calls for United Climate Action
In his peech during the Laudato Si Green Festival organized in collabration with the initiatives Laudato Si club at Holy Cross Lake View in Jinja – Uganda. The Director of the Laudato Youth Initiative Mr. Benard Kahwa called for stronger collaboration among communities, partners, and the government in addressing the growing challenges of climate change, emphasizing that environmental protection is a shared responsibility.
Speaking during the the Laudato Si green Festival. Pope Francis’ Legacy event in Uganda, the director said the gathering was not only a celebration of the planet but also a reminder of the collective duty to care for creation and Pope Francis’ call to action in Laudato Si and the Catholic Social Teachings.
“We have gathered here today not only to honor our planet but also to recognize the pressing duty we all have to care for it,” he said. Seated in an open air natural cathedral, Surrounded by thriving trees at the venue, participants were reminded of the importance of conserving nature and restoring the environment through practical actions.
The Mr. Benard noted that climate change is no longer a distant concern but an urgent reality affecting communities today and threatening the well-being of future generations. He emphasized that environmental degradation requires immediate action from everyone.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the crisis, he highlighted that simple local initiatives—such as planting trees and reducing plastic waste—can make a significant difference when embraced by individuals and communities.
However, he stressed that meaningful progress cannot be achieved in isolation. Instead, success depends on strong partnerships involving civil society, development organizations, communities, and government institutions.
He expressed gratitude to the Rt. Hon Kasule Lumumba, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance for accepting the invitation to attend the event despite a busy schedule, describing the minister’s presence as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and climate action.
He also thanked the the Laudato Si Club at Holy Cross Lake View S.S.S led by Ms. Immaculate Kisembo and its partners for their continued support in organizing the festival and advancing environmental awareness across Uganda.
Calling for sustained cooperation, he urged all stakeholders to remain united in building a sustainable future for both present and future generations.
Echoing the organization’s motto, “United for Climate Action,” he encouraged everyone to work together to protect the environment and ensure a healthier, greener Uganda.
His message of hope and gratitude as thanking all participants for their commitment and wished them God’s blessings.
