Nestled on the picturesque Virika Hill in Fort Portal City, Virika Cathedral has been a symbol of hope and faith since its construction in 1967, with its dedication following in 1968. This sacred space, established by Bishop Vincent Joseph McCauley—a figure celebrated for his exemplary life—serves as a guiding light for the local community. As the first Bishop of this Cathedral, Bishop McCauley not only nurtured the religious community but also touched the lives of countless individuals who sought his wisdom. Today, Our Lady of Snows Virika Cathedral stands as a testament to a vibrant Christian life filled with faith and hope.
The Inauguration of Virika Cathedral was a celebration of Hope because Bishop McCauley founded Interfaith Cooperation and was instrumental in building ecumenical ties. He built bridges between Catholics and Anglicans by establishing the ecumenical Uganda Joint Christian Council. As we imagine a world of peaceful coexistence among nations in our world his life is an inspiration and the place of worship, he build has remained a uniting home for people in the region. Every season of lent we see different faith denominations come together for the way of the Cross prayer for peace and celebrate faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
1964-79: As a leader in the conference of East African bishops (AMECEA), he supported refugees and helped establish the Catholic University of East Africa in 1979 this is a great contribution to building a just an peaceful community.
His famous for his quote ‘The Gospel, the Church, must be incarnated in the African culture in which we live.” Was an acknowledgement of African cultures as units of strong family bonds with a culture which celebrates its faith and Music. This event was marked with very a very inspirational choir that gave the congregation and opportunity to worship and Praise God their Creator.
The Cathedral
Tour Lady of Snows Virika Cathedral has undergone three renovations, with the most recent Inauguration taking place on March 2, 2025. This year, recognized as a Year of Hope within the Catholic Church, sees Our Lady of Snows Cathedral Virika inspiring Christians through its breathtaking beauty and the spiritual renewal it offers to all who approach it. During the blessing ceremony, His Lordship Bishop Robert Muhiirwa, Akiiki urged the faithful to embark on pilgrimages throughout this Jubilee year, emphasizing Virika Cathedral as a prime destination for those seeking to renew their faith and seek indulgences.
The rededication echoes Bishop McCauley’s profound spiritual teachings, such as “With Mary You Can Never Go Wrong.” More importantly, the Cathedral embodies his dedication to service, reflecting the values he instilled in the community. As we pray for the cause of his beatification, it is essential to recognize that he not only built this Cathedral but also laid the foundation for a community of Christians committed to their faith, embarking on spiritual journeys, nurturing families, and forging religious paths for future generations. The response of the faithful to their Christian vocations has been one of faith, hope, peace, and justice.
