Jinja is stepping into the future with a groundbreaking initiative that promises to transform public transport in Uganda and set a precedent for sustainable travel nationwide. Over the weekend on the 23rd of Nov 2024, E-Bus Xpress launched its innovative electric bus service, marking a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to eco-friendly transportation.

The E-Bus Xpress fleet is made up of Kayoola EVS electric buses, which are designed to operate without emitting any harmful pollutants. This means riders can enjoy a serene and comfortable journey while contributing to a cleaner environment.

In a bid to modernize the payment process, E-Bus Xpress has adopted a fully cashless system. Passengers can purchase a KaCyber Go card via a simple code, eliminating the need for physical cash transactions that are time wasting and tedious to collect payments.

The electric buses will operate on two key routes: from Jinja Town/Clive Road to Iganga and from Jinja Town/Clive Road to Nakibizi. Service hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., providing convenient options for commuters throughout the day.

The benefits of electric buses are manifold. They not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, significantly lowering the carbon footprint of public transport, but also contribute to improved air quality in urban areas. Additionally, the quiet operation of electric buses enhances the overall travel experience, making for a more pleasant journey for passengers and reducing noise pollution in city environments.

The cashless payment system provides added convenience, allowing for quicker boarding and more efficient management of fare collection. This modern approach to public transport is not only practical but also aligns with global trends towards digitization and sustainability.

I should say, Jinja’s introduction of electric buses marks a significant advancement in Uganda’s public transport landscape. This initiative is not just a win for environmental enthusiasts’ youth like us in Laudato; it also sets the stage for a future where eco-conscious travel becomes the norm and encourages more young people to consider doing more in setting innovative solutions to solving the ecological crisis in our country. My biggest credit goes to Kiira Motors Corporation for driving us towards a greener tomorrow.

Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) is where innovation meets sustainability in the heart of Africa’s mobility revolution. They are just more than just a mobility enterprise – they are pioneers of progress, champions of innovation, leading environmental action response and architects of change but most importantly models of Uganda’s step forward in scientific innovation that is a ray of hope for young people in practical sciences and poverty alleviation a big message emphasized in Laudato Si.
