On July 11, 2026, the Laudato Youth Initiative and its Laudato Si Club at Holy Cross Lake View Senior Secondary School hosted their third Laudato Si’ Green Festival. The event brought together thousands of youth, educators, school leaders, religious figures, and community members to raise awareness about caring for our common home.

Moral Formation
The festival featured several key activities, most notably the launch of the Bishop Charles Martin Wamika Legacy and Memorial Program. This initiative is dedicated to promoting good manners (empiisa enungi) and responsible use of the internet, inspired by the teachings of the late Bishop Charles Martin Wamika. The program was officially launched by Br. Adolf Mugume, together with Uganda’s Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Rt. Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba. They were joined by the Provincial Superior, of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Province of East Africa, Fr. Caxton Peter Mayanja, C.S.C.; Headteacher Fr. Prosper Atukwatse, C.S.C.; leaders of the Laudato Youth Initiative; and other distinguished guests.

Br. Adolf Mugume, C.S.C., mentor of the Laudato Youth Initiative and Director of Communications for the Congregation of Holy Cross in Rome, noted that: “This program will commemorate the late Bishop and seek to instill in young people the values of good manners (empiisa enungi) and responsible use of technology and social media. These are qualities the late Bishop ardently emphasized in his June 3, 2023, Uganda Martyrs Day homily when he stated:
“The youth of today, you seem more affected by modern life: smartphone- internet, empiisa enungi (good manners) seem to have been thrown overboard. The majority of the Uganda Martyrs were youth like you. When you grow old, how about creating a website? “WWW.EMPIISA ENUNGI.COM”. Dear pilgrims, look around and take note when you get back home, what is it that you will share about the Martyrs? May the Lord increase your faith so that you get whatever you asked for today. Nearly a year after Bishop Wamika’s passing, this project seeks to honor his legacy of pastoral attentiveness to young people, a legacy that inspired faith and innovation. The late Bishop Charles Martin Wamika often said, “With faith, there are no jokes,” and promoted devotion to the Uganda Martyrs as role models of faith in Uganda and young people to lead a dignified life, guided by hard work while encouraging scientific innovation himself having been a scientist himself, he desired to see young people engage positively with technology to solve societal challenges and minster using media to make God Known Loved and Served.

Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba commended the empiisaenungi.com program, noting its alignment with national efforts to promote moral and cultural values. She emphasized that, beyond technology, communication, and innovation, her responsibilities in national guidance include encouraging the responsible use of digital platforms, which can sometimes undermine cultural and religious values among youth. She urged students to use technology responsibly, for the benefit of humanity, and to promote knowledge and positive social values.Read the full story
