The Message of Pope Leo XIV in His First Encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas

In his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, our Holy Father Pope Leo XIV asserts that humanity stands at a critical juncture due to rapid advancements in powerful technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) (Pope Leo XIV, May 15 2026). While he acknowledges that technology holds the potential to benefit society, he emphasizes that human beings must remain in control and prioritize fundamental values such as truth, dignity, justice, love, and community as a way to care for God’s Creation. He highlights that;

1. Technology should help people, not replace them

AI can perform remarkable tasks; however, the encyclical warns against treating individuals as mere machines, data, or commodities (Pope Leo XIV, 2026). Human dignity must take precedence over profits, popularity, or efficiency.

2. Social Media and AI Can Distort Reality

The encyclical cautions that fake images, manipulated videos, algorithm-driven content, and the overwhelming volume of online information can create confusion and erode public trust. Pope Leo XIV underscores the importance of objective truth, warning that democracy is undermined when people disregard what is true (Pope Leo XIV, 2026).

3. Young People Deserve Protection Online

The Pope expresses particular concern about the effects of constant digital stimulation, addictive applications, online exploitation, and cultural pressures on the mental health and identity of young people. He advocates for collaboration among families, schools, and governments to foster healthier digital environments (Pope Leo XIV, 2026).

4. Work Should Give People Dignity

The encyclical explains that employment is not solely about financial gain; rather, meaningful work gives individuals purpose and strengthens communities. The Pope criticizes economic systems that prioritize profit over the dignity of workers by replacing them with machines or AI (Pope Leo XIV, 2026).

5. AI Should Never Control Life-and-Death Decisions

Pope Leo XIV strongly opposes the use of autonomous weapons and AI systems that make life-and-death decisions. He insists that technology deployed in warfare should always remain under human responsibility and moral oversight (Pope Leo XIV, 2026).

6. Every Person Has Equal Value

A central message of the encyclical is that human worth is inherent and not contingent upon intelligence, material success, productivity, appearance, or influence. Every individual possesses dignity simply by virtue of being human (Pope Leo XIV, 2026).

7. The Church Also Admits Past Mistakes

The encyclical includes a historic apology for the Vatican’s role in supporting slavery centuries ago. Pope Leo XIV emphasizes that the Church must honestly confront its past failures while actively defending human dignity in the present (Pope Leo XIV, 2026).

In summary, Pope Leo XIV poses an essential question: “What kind of future are we building?” (Pope Leo XIV, 2026, p. 14).

He asserts that humanity faces a choice between creating a cold, unjust world dominated by technology and power, or building a society rooted in truth, compassion, justice, and human dignity (Pope Leo XIV, 2026).
