FAQs

GENERAL INFORMATION

What is One Million Tree Planting Drive?

The One Million tree planting drive is a yearlong (2024 – 2025) campaign aimed at mitigation and restoration of the eco system. Our first activities were undertaken by our Laudato Si Clubs in institutions and Dioceses across the Country. By planting fruit and indigenous trees, we are reducing our Carbon Footprint and helping recover degraded areas and trees lost to harmful activities like deforestation for charcoal burning, farming, wetland reclamation etc.

As you may know forests help to restore the lost eco system. They filter and clean water, Cleanse the air, Cool the planet, Suck and store Carbon, give us shed and shelter to animals, provide us food and medicine that is typical of our African Livelihoods and survival etc.

By planting trees strategically based on Uganda’s rainy season and climate change considerations, we aim to contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing carbon footprint, reducing greenhouse gases, and enhancing overall environmental resilience and sustainability.

Schools can participate through Laudato Si clubs and by organizing educational programs in communities during the Laudato Si Festival, collaborating with local environmental organizations and the church, Laudato Youth incorporate study under the new curriculum so they inco-operate tree planting projects in their assignments, fostering environmental awareness among students through debates that inspire institutions to take up tree planting as a responsibility.

The One Million Trees can help us reduce on the damage and the Earth from climate change and biodiversity loss. When we restore and conserve critical forests, we remove carbon and support biodiversity

Which native and Fruit tree species are you recommending?

We emphasize the planting of native and fruit tree species adapted to the specific regions of the country, promoting biodiversity, supporting local ecosystems, and ensuring the long-term ecological balance in our Country Uganda.

Yes, we encourage optimal planting seasons based on regional climate patterns, ensuring that tree planted have the best conditions to thriving.

The Laudato Youth One Million Tree Drive emphasizes planting of indigenous trees because they are local home grown, native, grow naturally, and are suited to our climate and soils. But most importantly, indigenous trees form an important part of the ecosystem. Our indigenous birds, insects, fungi and animals depend on them.

Native trees need less care, have a better chance of survival, and provide food and shelter for local wildlife. More they;
Uganda being an Agricultural Country they help in Land reclamation and stabilization, Nitrogen fixation (conservation farming), Windbreaks, provide wood fuel through fallen branches
On land they act as Shade (car parks, students’ institutions, sports facilities etc), Avenues (streets), Feature trees, Golf courses etc
Forest and woodland products: Honey, mushrooms, vitamins, nutrition
More so they need;
Less need for fertilizer, save water, they are non-invasive and They're beautiful!

Uganda has unmatched comparative advantage for growing fruits and vegetables due to its warm, less humid tropical climate, plentiful rainfall and numerous opportunities for irrigation.
So our fruit trees will help to slow down global warming by reducing CO2 in the atmosphere and introducing more O2, in addition provide multiple environmental benefits, including increasing the soil quality and organic carbon levels in the soil, avoiding erosion.
