PROJECT INTRODUCTION
The Smart Water Pump is an innovative solution designed to transport water efficiently from a source, such as a lake or river, to a storage tank for later use. This technology is especially vital in drought-prone areas such as Karamoja (Uganda) and South Sudan, where water access is limited. The project aims to offer a low-cost, efficient, and environmentally-friendly method of delivering water for domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes.
PROBLEM STATEMENT / PURPOSE
Regions like Karamoja and South Sudan experience water scarcity due to high temperatures, drought, and limited water sources. In South Sudan, the Nile River serves as the main source of water, but distribution is challenging. This water pump innovation helps by:
• Improving access to clean water.
• Reducing the physical burden of fetching water.
• Supporting agricultural irrigation, industrial cooling, and domestic chores like cooking and washing.
MATERIALS USED IN THE SMART WATER PUMP PROTOTYPE
1. DC Motor – Drives the propeller.
2. Batteries – Provide power to the motor.
3. Tube (Outlet Tube) – Transports water to the storage tank.
4. Propeller – Helps move water using rotation and pressure.
5. Containers – Act as the water source and the storage tank.
6. Bottle Covers – Used in constructing the casing or outlet path.
7. Wires – Connect electrical components.
8. Glue – Used for assembly and sealing joints.
HOW IT WORKS – SYSTEM FLOW
1. Power Supply:
Batteries are connected to the DC motor, supplying electrical current.
2. Motor Activation:
When powered, the motor rotates the propeller, generating motion and pressure.
3. Water Movement:
• The spinning propeller creates pressure to draw water from the source.
• Water is diverged into the casing, then converged into the outlet tube.
• A spherical blocker prevents water from entering the motor directly and redirects flow.
4. Water Transfer:
Water travels through the outlet tube into the storage tank.
5. Storage & Use:
The water is stored safely for domestic, agricultural, or industrial use.
Note: The system relies on pressure and capillary action to function efficiently.
SECOND PHASE / FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
In the second phase of the project, we aim to:
1. Add a Sieve or Filter:
• Positioned at the inlet to prevent entry of debris, pollutants, and aquatic animals, ensuring clean water and protecting the internal mechanism.
2. Install a Switch:
• To easily turn the pump on or off, enhancing user control and safety.

CONCLUSION
The Smart Water Pump by the Laudato Youth is an innovative and practical response to real-world climate challenges. It is a cost-effective solution that enhances water accessibility, especially in regions suffering from drought and limited infrastructure. With future upgrades like filtration and switch mechanisms, this project promises to be even more efficient and sustainable.
