By Laudato Voices
On May 29th, something truly inspiring happened. Our Laudato Youth Initiative (LYI) Clubs president Sarah Kirikumwino visited the Bethany Land Institute (BLI) in Nandere, Uganda. From the moment of arrival, it was clear: BLI is not just a place; it’s a living example of what ecological restoration and integral ecology really look like in action.
From model gardens to intercropped fields, and even animals and birds like pigs, goats, chickens, and guinea fowls, everything at BLI is rooted in nature’s wisdom. It’s a space where education meets conservation, and theory is transformed into practice and hope for a sustained common home.
Learning from a Visionary leader
During the visit, she had the honor of meeting Professor Fr. Emmanuel Katongole, co-founder and president of BLI, and also a Professor of Theology and Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame (USA). In a powerful meeting with the BLI team, Fr. Katongole encouraged the Laudato Youth to continue their mission and applauded the work we’ve been doing with young people in schools and communities and churches.
One key takeaway?
We will not see much hands-on agriculture in schools without active Laudato Si Clubs, Fr. Katongole said. This message couldn’t be more timely. As Laudato Youth, we believe that real change starts with education especially when it’s in the hands of young, passionate people.
Big News: We’re Presenting at LSAC 2025!
We’re thrilled to announce that the Laudato Youth Initiative will be presenting at the upcoming
Laudato Si Africa Conference (LSAC 2025), hosted by BLI from July 23–25, 2025.
The conference theme is:
“10 Years After Laudato Si’: Where is Africa?”
A powerful question that will guide interdisciplinary dialogue around progress in Integral Ecology & Human Development across the African continent.
Our presentation is will be titled:

This is more than a paper, it’s a platform for our voices, our stories, and our vision of a more just, green, and compassionate Africa.
