Laudato Youth Initiative

We are a non-profit Catholic Religious Youth-Led initiative in Uganda that promotes the encyclical Laudato Si’ and Enviromental Action to create more sustainable communities. Our activities and programs focus on responding to climate change through clubs in schools, universities, and dioceses.

The launch of the Laudato Si’ Club at Wakatayi w

The launch of the Laudato Si’ Club at Wakatayi with @bethanylandinstitute was more than symbolic, it’s a living example of what interfaith action for ecological justice looks like:

Students will engage in activities such as tree planting, school clean-ups, water conservation, and environmental education.

Faith leaders from both Muslim and Christian communities have come together to bless the initiative, showing that care for creation transcends religious boundaries.

Meanwhile the Catholic Church in Africa declared that the climate crisis a moral and ecological emergency. Despite contributing least to global emissions, Africa bears the brunt of its impacts. The way forward

1. Africa-led solutions rooted in indigenous wisdom
2. Renewable energy like solar to end energy poverty
3. Climate finance with justice not debt
4. Reject false solutions and fossil fuel expansion
5. Bold, urgent action grounded in Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum

The Church to commit to ecological conversion, advocacy at COP30, and building a green, resilient Africa.

Laudato Youth Initiative strives to build a Climate Resilient generation and now inspired by the message “Africa must rise as a moral voice and agent of its own transformation.”

“We must shift from collecting data to caring…

“We must shift from collecting data to caring…” said Pope Leo XIV in his address for the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’,

The Holy Father reminded us that the crisis of our day is not only environmental or political; it is spiritual. He challenged us to embrace ecological conversion, rooted in love, solidarity, and justice. Our takeaway points were;

The cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor are not separate. Caring for creation is inseparable from caring for humanity, especially those most vulnerable.

Real change demands communal conversion from policy and innovation, but first of all from the heart.

Our second Interfaith Conference on Creation and Peace in held at St. Peter's Nsambya Kampala Uganda brought together young people, leaders from various faiths, and elders. Among the key topics discussed were the impact of Franciscan spirituality on caring for creation especially in light of its 800th anniversary as well as building bridges of love for our neighbors and deepening care for one another and all of God’s people

The birds offering their hymn of praise…
The rhythm of water flowing gently…
The humble chorus of insects at work…

In this sacred soundscape, our Laudato Si’ Club of Gulu gathered to celebrate a Creation Mass not inside four walls, but in the embrace of God’s creation.

Together, we reflected on the deep need for world peace, for healing from the impacts of war and among generations, praying for deceased Laudato Si Club members and for uniting in action to care for our common home.

In the stillness, we listened.
In the beauty, we prayed.
In the moment, we remembered that peace with creation begins with peace in the human heart.

May our footsteps echo into the future as seeds of hope, unity, and ecological conversion.

Oct 1 during international conference on climate justice themed “Raising Hope” Pope Leo XIV emphasized the significance of the statement “Care for our common home” saying these words, first echoed in Laudato Si’, have shaped global conversations for the past decade.

The only Father also reflected on the enduring legacy of Pope Francis’ encyclical, noting how its message has taken root in schools, dioceses, academic programs, economic and business sectors, interfaith initiatives, and beyond.

He reminded us that the challenges identified in Laudato Si’ from ecological degradation to social injustice are even more urgent today. Addressing them calls not just for political will, but for a conversion of heart: *a return to where our deepest values and decisions are forged.* Highlighting that this transformation moves us:

1. From collecting data to truly caring
2. From environmental talk to faith-inspired lifestyles. Indirectly saying indirectly that it’s now time for us to unite for action

He further appealed that as global leaders prepare for summits like COP30 Brazil and the United Nations 2026 Water Conference, emphasis should be on
1. Ecological concern
2. Justice for the poor
3. Building social responsibility
4. Inner peace which are inseparable values.

Pope Leo ended with a question “What will be our answer?” when the time comes, and God asks us if we cared for our common home. A question not just for leaders, but for each of us.

We are joining the Holy Father at Castel Gandolfo for the Raising Hope conference

In joyful celebration of the Season of Creation 20

In joyful celebration of the Season of Creation 2025, the Laudato Si’ Club of St. André Bessette Catholic Parish, Koch Goma, held a full day of inspiring and impactful activities aimed at deepening ecological awareness, honoring local environmental champions, and inspiring action among the youth. The day was graced by a care of the creation Mass led by Fr. Berry Apire, CSC in one of their eco forest where they shared faith in an natural environment a testament to the power of faith in action and the sacred call to care for our common home.

Today, the Laudato Youth Initiative (LYI), in partnership with @bethanylandinstitute (BLI), celebrated the @seasonofcreation under the theme “Peace with Creation.” The event began with a Creation Mass led by Rev. Fr. Joseph Nsereko of St. Kizito Nattyole Parish. In his homily, he encouraged young people to embrace hope, use their talents to serve God, and care for creation, reminding us to make peace with God, nature, and our neighbors. He emphasized that the earth is our common home, and caring for it begins with each of us being able to pursue our dreams while respecting the common good.

Our Laudato Si’ Clubs President, @kirikumwinosarah , together with the BLI team led by Ruth, officially launched three new clubs: the Laudato Si’ Clubs of St. Kizito Primary School, Wakatayi Primary School, and Bukasa Roman Catholic Primary School. An action response to the Laudato Si Africa Resilience Summit and the Laudato Si Africa Conference that took place at BLI in July. These clubs will now carry the LYI model of Clubs and BLI agro ecology approach to a project centred learning. They will have the opportunity to learn sustainable farming, enterprise, forest protection, tree nursery management, reforestation, ecological education, and community outreach. All these will bring to life the message of Laudato Si’ in schools, parishes, and communities.

Students and their patrons were greatly inspired, and they expressed their passion to care for creation care through songs, poetry, and drama, blending culture, science, innovation, faith and ecology. #integralecology @bliuganda @taprootearth

On October 1st, we will gather at Castel Gandolfo, within the sacred grounds of Borgo Laudato Si, for the Raising Hope for Climate Justice Conference. By opening his home to climate leaders, Pope Leo offers a prophetic gesture; a call to communion with creation and with one another. This gathering breathes life into Pope Francis’ vision of ecological conversion: a spiritual awakening to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. In this holy place, we come not only to act, but to listen, to pray, and to walk the path of justice with renewed hope for climate justice, build resilience and peaceful co existence. “ we are all connected”

Among those invited: former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger veteran climate advocate Bill McKibben leading climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe, Ingmar Rentzhog we will join to share our stories from grassroots communities and the voices of young people living the ecological legacy of Pope Francis along with Bethany Land Institute to share our approach to integral ecology in the African world view following the Africa Laudato Si Conference on the 10 years of Laudato Si where is Africa?
