Mitigate Single use – plastics

The Laudato Youth Initiative, through its vibrant network of Laudato Si’ Clubs, is actively working to mitigate the use and impact of single-use plastics across Uganda.
Guided by the principles of integral ecology from Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, these youth-led clubs are promoting a culture of environmental responsibility by:
• Raising awareness in schools, parishes, and communities about the environmental and health dangers of single-use plastics; Read Full Story
• Advocating for plastic-free events and religious gatherings, including church services, youth conferences, and community celebrations;
• Training students and youth leaders to lead plastic clean-up campaigns, introduce alternatives like reusable bags, and influence policy change;
• Partnering like minded and faith-based institutions to model zero-plastic operations and promote biodegradable materials in church-run schools, health centers, and seminaries;
• Monitoring and reporting illegal plastic use or dumping in local communities through participatory citizen action;
• And empowering local innovation by supporting young entrepreneurs and women-led groups in parishes creating sustainable plastic alternatives
Through these integrated efforts, the Laudato Youth Initiative is not only reducing plastic waste but is also forming a new generation of ecological stewards committed to building a cleaner, healthier, and more just Uganda.
