ROOTS Campaign: Reversing Deforestation, One Tree at a Time

At the heart of this year’s celebration is the Running Out of Trees (ROOTS) campaign, a nation-wide initiative led by the Forestry Sector Support Department under the Ministry of Water and Environment, in partnership with a broad range of stakeholders. The campaign carries a bold and inspiring goal: to plant 40 million trees each year, one for every Ugandan.
More than just a planting drive, ROOTS promotes:
• Reforestation and restoration of degraded landscapes
• Conservation of existing forests
• Sustainable forest management
• Community ownership and engagement in nurturing trees to maturity
According to the organizers of the event the campaign’s inclusive approach ensures that individuals, schools, faith-based groups, private sector actors, and local governments all play an active role in shaping Uganda’s green future.

Youth Empowerment Through Action

Among the many participants this year was our Laudato Si Club of Holy Cross Lake View S.S.S, who not only joined the tree planting efforts at Busoga College Mwiri. Our involvement is an affirmation to our ongoing one million tree planting drive in which we believe if our Nation continues to unite institutions and stake holders for Climate Action we shall achieve quick progress in reforesting our Country.  The idea of holding such events ins schools is great as it empowers young people to take part in environmental action and lead advocacy for a sustainable future. Through our Laudato Si Green Festival we shall remain Committed to Raising Awareness and Uniting Communities to do the same as a way to contribute to such important National Programs.

Indigenous and Fruit Trees in Focus

The campaign puts a strong emphasis on planting indigenous and fruit tree species, promoting biodiversity, improving food security, and supporting livelihoods. Indigenous trees are vital for maintaining ecological balance, while fruit trees offer long-term benefits to communities. This year’s National Tree Planting Day marks yet another milestone in Uganda’s reforestation journey. With the ROOTS campaign continuing throughout the year, individuals and organizations are encouraged to take part in planting and nurturing trees in their own communities.
Together, through strategic partnerships and empowered citizen action, we can reverse deforestation, restore Uganda’s natural heritage, and ensure a greener, more resilient country for generations.  Whether you’re a student, farmer, teacher, business leader, School or simply a concerned citizen your hands can help grow a forest.
