Innovation stands tall on the twin pillars of building and advancement. On a memorable Sunday, June 16th, I had the privilege of attending the Holy Cross Lake View S.S.S Science and Innovation Expo that featured several edge cutting sustainable projects by students.

The celebration that began with the thanksgiving left no stone unturned throughout the day, various events unfolded, showcasing the school’s commitment to unveiling creativity and innovation by equipping students with practical skills, alongside scientific knowledge, a commitment that Laudato Youth want to embrace through the Laudato Club. As the President of the Laudato Clubs, I had the opportunity to engage with the students and witness their passion-driven projects, addressing real-world challenges.

One group of students impressed me with their solar systems that autonomously tracked the sun’s position for maximum efficiency. Another team showcased a miniature helicopter designed for rescue missions during natural disasters, offering hope in times of crises like floods and landslides.

The power of empowering young minds with such skills cannot be overstated. Holy Cross Lake View, with its impeccable reputation as a model institution, is shaping a generation capable of contributing significantly to society, while also promoting environmental sustainability through innovative technologies.

A notable project was the smart garden, emphasizing the importance of sustainable measures in combating food insecurity and malnutrition.

By developing natural pesticides derived from plants, these students are not only addressing agricultural challenges but also promoting soil health and food safety.

It is evident that the fight against climate change is intertwined with all aspects of our lives, and investing in sustainable solutions is paramount for future prosperity.

The school’s curriculum, focused on practical learning and mentorship, plays a crucial role in nurturing students’ potential and guiding them towards meaningful research and innovation. The dedicated teachers at Holy Cross are true educators, instilling values of faith and service while preparing students to tackle real-world problems with creativity and resilience.

As we navigate the challenges of a changing world, Holy Cross Lake View emerges as a beacon of hope in science, creativity, and environmental consciousness. These rising generations of youth are poised to become leaders in sustainability, setting an inspiring example for their peers, communities, and the world at large.

In unity for climate action,
Sarah Kirikumwino
President, Laudato Clubs
