The Laudato Youth Initiative, in collaboration with the John Paul II Justice and Peace Center, recently took part in the Laudato Nature walk with the theme of analyzing the relationship between humanity and nature. The event brought together members of the Laudato clubs from Nyakasura School, Divine Mercy SSS, and Mountains of the Moon University, highlighting the growth and transformation that occurs in both humans and biodiversity.
During the walk, a community cleaning exercise was conducted at the Rwaihamba market, where locals were educated on the importance of preserving nature. Some residents even joined in the cleanup, learning how waste can be turned into a valuable resource, such as using perishables for compost.
The beauty of creation was evident throughout the walk, with visits to Lake Nyinambuga and Lake Mwamba offering insights into the diverse ecosystems present in the region. The introduction of tilapia fish in the lakes as a solution to malnutrition and food security issues served as a practical example of environmental stewardship and sustainable resource management.
The excursion also shed light on the challenges facing the area, including soil erosion leading to siltation in the lakes, which in turn affects fish populations and causes flooding. The impact of climate change on the environment was a key topic of discussion, emphasizing the need for immediate action to combat its effects and promote sustainable practices.
It was evident that more action and less talk is crucial in addressing environmental issues and preserving the natural beauty of Uganda and beyond. The detrimental effects of activities like mining and stone quarrying were also highlighted, serving as a reminder of the urgent need to protect our planet for future generations.
The insights gained from the nature walk underscored the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the environment and fostering a harmonious relationship between humanity and nature. Through education, advocacy, and practical solutions, we can work towards a sustainable future for all.
