As the jubilee year kicked off on December 24, 2024, the Laudato Youth Initiative sprang into action, eager to ignite a wave of enthusiasm among young people for a sustainable future. With a plethora of innovative ideas in the air—ranging from sustainable science initiatives to modern agriculture aimed at alleviating unemployment—one theme resonated most strongly: the power of behavioral change and mentorship.

In a country where the economy is steadily growing, but many youths still grapple with uncertainty about their futures. Pressing challenges such as climate change and rising unemployment cast shadows on their aspirations. Yet, amid these struggles lies a beacon of hope—the burgeoning field of agricultural science and innovation. This sector is the backbone of Uganda’s progress, offering young people a path to meaningful engagement and paving way ecological conversion and the integration of ecology for growth and development.

In an age dominated by technology and digital advancements, we are witnessing a remarkable uptick in youth involvement in modern agriculture. This shift represents not just a change in vocation but a profound opportunity for young individuals to redefine their futures. Rather than solely pursuing traditional white-collar jobs, many are now embracing the potential of agriculture, from cultivating crops to raising livestock. Educational reforms, including the new curriculum that is competence based and the introduction of Laudato Si clubs by the Laudato Youth Initiative focused on creative problem-solving, for a sustainable future have further empowered youth to harness their innovative thinking. This new curriculum encourages them to view challenges as opportunities for development, fostering a generation that is both resourceful and resilient. We have seen many of our Laudato Youth come up with creative science projects and activities to transform their institutions.

Moreover, Uganda’s impressive increase in tele-density—which reflects the growing access to telecommunications—presents an additional layer of opportunity. Armed with the right mentorship and a forward-thinking business model, young people can shift their perspectives on success. They can transition from viewing education merely as a steppingstone to employment, to seeing it as a gateway to meaningful contributions that benefit both the economy and the environment.

Through this transformative approach, we envision a future where youth are not only participants in the economy but also leaders of sustainable change. By investing in mentorship and encouraging behavioral shifts, the Laudato Youth Initiative is paving the way for unprecedented socio-economic growth, propelling our country and its young people to new heights.

We believe this effort that has ushered us in the jubilee year will see us inspire and mentor youth to be a productive force in our country, because we are nurturing the potential of our youth, empowering them to shape a brighter, more sustainable future for themselves and for Uganda. The road ahead may be challenging, but with determination and collaboration, we can forge a path filled with hope and opportunity. Only if we all unite for climate action then we can build a climate resilient society. For the future is in the hands of young people.
