WATER AND ENVIRONMENT WEEK 2026
March 14, 2026 Laudato Si Club members of Nyakasura School were trained on Water Quality Bio-monitoring and they were also equipped with skills to monitor and protect our water resources. This comes as we approach the Water and Environment week 2026.
We have started the Water week and the theme is about “THE ROLE OF WATER AND ENVIRONMENT IN ACHIEVING UGANDA’S TENFOLD GROWTH STRATEGY”
Special thanks go to Mr Mugenyi Kadir of Kyaniga Forest Foundation (KFF) for the Hands-on training on building a wetland-friendly future for all.
By understanding the tiny creatures that live in our wetlands, they’re learning the importance of preserving these ecosystems.

Mining and quarrying supply vital materials for construction and economic growth in Uganda. Without proper regulation, these activities can damage the environment and harm communities that rely on local natural resources.
Karangura Hills and River Mpanga: A Local Example
In western Uganda, the Karangura hills in Kabarole District are a major source of sand and stone for local construction, particularly along River Mpanga, which flows from the Rwenzori Mountains through Fort Portal and several districts before emptying into Lake George (Atuhaire, 2023; Monitor Reporter, 2016). Quarrying and sand mining often take place on or near riverbanks. Residents note that stone extraction sometimes involves heating rocks in the river to weaken them, increasing sediment and debris in the water (Polite, 2023).
Nyakasura School’s Laudato Si Club Nature Walk, National Tourism Day 2025
On this year’s National Tourism Day, the Laudato Si Club of Nyakasura School took to the lush trails of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, embarking on a deeply reflective and purposeful Green Walk to Karangura Peak. With the theme “Sowing Seeds of Peace and Care for Creation,” the event wasn’t just a hike, it was a call to action, a spiritual and ecological journey into the heart of one of Uganda’s most vital ecosystems.

The Laudato Youth Initiative is turning its youth into innovators through the competence-based curriculum, forming them spiritually, socially and empowering them to act creatively on Climate Change and its effects on the youth and neighboring communities.
Save Ecology Begin by Planting Trees
This initiative aims to increase green cover, mitigate climate change effects, and enhance biodiversity. The collective effort to plant trees helps create a healthier and more balanced environment for present and future generations..
Waste management
Effective waste management is important for a clean environment. It includes responsible collection, processing, and disposal. Communities can help by recycling and disposing of waste properly, reducing strain on landfills and pollution while saving resources. This approach, with comprehensive strategies, benefits both the environment and public health.
Educate and inspire the youth about Climate change
Raise awareness about the global waste crisis and the significance of sustainable living. Educate your family, friends, and colleagues about responsible consumption, reducing single-use plastics, and making informed product choices.
Uniting Youth for Climate Action
Young people should be given an opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills they need to build a sustainable future. Laudato Youth Initiative Unites, Inspires Action, Empowers, Fosters Mindset Change and builds the capacity of the youth to work with elders and address climate change for a better future.
