Jubilee 2025 - Pilgrims of Hope

Goal: To Enhance Climate Action in Uganda

Theme: Laudato Youth as “Pilgrims of Green Hope”

A Journey of Faith, Science, and Ecology with Laudato Youth.

To celebrate the Jubilee Year the Laudato Youth Initiative will explore practical ways to bridge the intersection Between Faith, Science, and Ecology: to enhance Climate action in Uganda as pilgrims of green hope for the future integrating the message of Laudato Si’, Catholic Social Teaching, Millennium Development Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Ugandan cultural religious wisdom and environmental laws into a year-long initiative focused on climate action in schools, parishes, dioceses and communities across Uganda and other associated clubs of the Laudato Youth Initiative.

We will face this year as challenge and an opportunity to delve deeper into our foundational values and establish a framework that embodies the African Perspective of Integral Ecology, deeply intertwined with our faith. This Jubilee Year is an invitation for us to foster hope among young people.

Pilgrims of Green Hope

Leaders are the torchbearers of change exemplifying activities of monumental impact!

The moment for action is upon us! As the Laudato Youth Initiative. We stand as pioneers of unity for climate action and hope for transformation. This jubilee year, we are focusing on igniting the flame of environmental optimism and hope Uniting young people and leaders to take actions of hope. In Kiserian, Nairobi, the Holy Cross community there is championing activities of green hope. A recent visit by their Provincial Fr. Peter Caxton Mayanja, C.S.C., saw a act of unity and hope while he together with Brother John Bailanda, planted a tree to add voice to the many other green initiatives they have been undertaking — a simple gesture with a profound significance!

For us this is a lesson to learn and be inspired as we continue to Unite, as champions of green hope, dedicated to preserving our planet for those who will come after us. What initiatives are you and I taking to pave the way?

True leadership is about service—pouring water to Brother John is for us a gesture of kindness, honor, and gratitude. The question for us all to ponder is are we serving, blessing, respecting, and uplifting those we lead?

We must cultivate the vision to recognize opportunities around us and the courage to act! Let’s embody the behaviors we wish to see in others! from being exemplary to being role models, all will pave away for us to cultivate hope to the world during this jubilee year as Pilgrims of Green Hope.

Our mission is to strengthen the unity of the youth for Climate Action through our Laudato Si clubs, which serve as a community platform for addressing environmental issues with practical solutions rooted in African ecological values and principles. We aim to advance an African interpretation of Laudato Si, Laudate Deum, and amplify voices for the Church’s Social Teachings regarding the environment, creating a synergy that integrates these essential church documents with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 13, as well as our Ugandan environmental laws. This approach will enable a cohesive and effective response to the challenges we face.”

3Es Climate Fresk Workshop held 2nd Feb

Our Go Green Laudato Si Club of Nairobi was honored to receive an invitation from the 3Es group to participate in the Climate Fresk workshop held in Kileleshwa, Nairobi. The 3Es organization is dedicated to promoting clean energy, environmental conservation, and empowerment initiatives within the community. The Climate Fresk activity itself is an engaging and interactive puzzle that uses cards to illustrate the causes and effects of climate change. Participants collaborate to arrange these cards, starting with the root causes and connecting them to their far-reaching impacts.

One of the primary causes emphasized during the workshop was the reliance on fossil fuels in our everyday activities, particularly in transportation and various industries. The consequences of this dependence are dire, leading to issues such as drought, human conflict, diseases, and poverty.

To cap off the workshop, participants were divided into groups, each focusing on potential solutions to these pressing challenges.

One group was tasked with raising awareness in schools and institutions through the Climate Fresk activities.

Another group aimed to engage the community by organizing events centered around green jobs and career opportunities.

A third group focused on leading the organization in policy formulation and advocacy at the national level, while the final group was responsible for seeking out partnerships to further the cause.

We are the change we wish to see, as pilgrims if green hope and to secure a brighter future, we must “unite now and act now” towards a common goal - building a sustainable future for all. As our club members say in Swahili, "umoja ni nguvu, utengano ni udhaifu"—there is strength in unity. Together, we can make a difference! as Laudato Youth by uniting with others for climate action
