Laudato Youth Initiative Announces Jubilee Year 2025 Theme: “Pilgrims of Green Hope”
John Paul II Justice and Peace Centre Kampala, Uganda – 16th Dec 2024 – The Laudato Youth Initiative is thrilled to announce its theme for the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025, titled “Pilgrims of Green Hope.” This year-long initiative aims to enhance climate action across Uganda and beyond by integrating faith, science, and ecology, inspired by the encyclical Laudato Si’ Laudate Deum, SDG 13, Catholic Social Teaching on the environment and Ugandan environmental laws.
In recognition of the Jubilee Year, we are embarking on a journey that seeks practical solutions to pressing environmental issues, rooted in the rich tapestry of Ugandan cultural and religious wisdom. Our goal is to inspire young people to take an active role in climate action within schools, parishes, dioceses, and communities, while fostering a strong sense of hope and unity among the youth.
“This Jubilee Year presents both a challenge and an incredible opportunity for introspection and growth,” said our Laudato Youth Mentor. “We invite young people to embrace their role as stewards of the environment, and stewards of the future marrying their faith with the cultural scientific understanding creation to create a sustainable future through applying their zeal, academic knowledge, creativity and innovation.
Our initiative will focus on developing a comprehensive framework that reflects the African Perspective of Integral Ecology, deeply connected to our faith of the Martyrs in Uganda who had a strong sense of value and love for ecology. By strengthening and forming more Laudato Si clubs, we will cultivate a community platform where youth can engage with environmental issues, discuss practical solutions, and amplify the Church’s social teachings regarding the environment.
The Laudato Youth Initiative will also work to harmonize the principles outlined in Laudato Si, Laudate Deum, and the Sustainable Development Goals—particularly Goal 13 on Climate Action—with Uganda’s environmental legislation. This collaborative approach aims to create a unified and effective response to the ecological challenges we face, ensuring that the voices of young people are heard loud and clear and their action response to be inspired.
Join us on this transformative journey as we step forward as pilgrims of green hope, committed to making a difference for our planet and future generations. Together, we can inspire a wave of climate action that resonates throughout Uganda and beyond.
