The Mountains of the Moon University’s Laudato Si Club under the Laudato Youth Initiative kicked off the fourth coming season of creation by organizing an engaging tree-planting event that brought together members to impact their campus community, and neighboring families to the school and some churches within the neighboring community of their campus.
Led by Doreen, the club president, and supported by mentors, the group planted 40 Grevellia trees on the university’s Lake Saaka Campus. Trees are known for their ability to improve air quality by acting as pollution control and air quality filters, absorbing harmful pollutants and releasing oxygen. The initiative aims to create a healthier environment for students and staff, promoting a conducive atmosphere for learning and inspiring others to take care of the environment.
The Laudato Si Club at MMU is part worked in collaboration with the diocesan youth office that provided the trees. In a bid to plant to plant one million trees a goal held by the Laudato Initiative for this year’s action activities. While sharing about her experience, Doreen emphasized that every tree planted makes a difference, and the club is committed to monitoring the growth and maintenance of the trees.
In addition to the university campus, the club also distributed trees to places of worship at the neighboring community of Saaka, totaling 110 trees. The goal is to encourage more tree planting, including fruit and indigenous trees, as a way to enhance the beauty, nutrition sustainability of the environment.
This tree-planting event received support from Mr. Alfred, the local council chairman, who commended the Laudato Youth for their dedication to environmental conservation and community engagement. He encouraged the youth to continue their efforts in inspiring others and organizing activities that benefit the community. By bringing together youth and mentors for a common purpose, the club is fostering unity and collaboration in caring for the environment and building the university community bonds.
Doreen expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic participation of both students and community members in the tree-planting activity, highlighting the shared commitment to environmental conservation. She was encouraged by the interest shown by new members and believes in the power of young leaders to drive positive change and create a sustainable future for all. As a gesture of their dedication, the Laudato Si Club members pledged to nurture and care for the planted trees, ensuring their growth and providing shade for future generations to enjoy.
